Kansas City Chiefs running back Jerick McKinnon has been designated to return from injured reserve and his practice window is open ahead of Super Bowl 58 against the San Francisco 49ers, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

McKinnon has been on IR since December due to a groin injury he suffered in the Chiefs' Week 15 game against the New England Patriots. Now, Kansas City could have him back for the biggest game of the year.

In 12 games this season McKinnon recorded 60 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. He also picked up 121 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 25 receptions.

While McKinnon has spent most of the season as a third option behind running backs Isiah Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire, he's established himself as a valuable outlet in the passing game for Patrick Mahomes.

It's not clear whether the Chiefs will need to go to McKinnon next Sunday, but having him available could provide the offense with an added wrinkle, especially in the red zone.

The Chiefs are looking to capture their second straight Super Bowl victory and a third in the past five seasons.
